No Kids Edition Needed! Set Up and Use Amazon Kids Mode on a Regular Kindle
Regular Kindle e-readers can use Amazon Kids (Kids Mode) just like the Kids Edition. This guide walks through creating a child profile, adding content, setting age filters and restrictions, and blocking purchases/ads so a standard Kindle is safe and kid-friendly.

On PC Create a Child Profile in the Parent Dashboard
First, you need to create a profile for the child who will use Kindle.
You can create a Kindle child profile from the "Parent Dashboard" on Amazon’s website. The Parent Dashboard can be used even without an Amazon Kids+ subscription, as long as you have an Amazon account.
Since you can create a profile for each child, you can set individual usage time limits and configure which Kindle books they can view.
On PC/Kindle Add Content to the Child Profile
Once the child profile is complete, add the content that can be viewed to the created profile.
The types of content you can add are:
- Kindle books (including Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading)
- Apps added from Amazon
- Videos purchased on Amazon (including Prime Video)
There are three types in total.
As for Amazon Kids+ content, children can freely choose and subscribe to it, so content management is not possible.
If You Want to Restrict Amazon Kids+ Content
If you want to restrict the content displayed in Amazon Kids+ according to your child’s age, go to the "Amazon Kids+ Content" section in the child’s profile settings and apply an age filter or language filter. You cannot designate individual content as viewable.
Start "Amazon Kids" Mode on a Kindle Device
Once the setup is complete, the only thing left is to switch the Kindle device to "Amazon Kids Mode."
To switch your Kindle device to "Amazon Kids Mode," tap the "three-dot menu" at the top right of the screen (outside of the reading screen) to open the menu, then simply select "Amazon Kids." It is very easy.
When you tap "Amazon Kids" for the first time, a screen asking "Do you want to subscribe to Amazon Kids+?" will appear. If you do not wish to subscribe to Amazon Kids+, just select "Use Amazon Kids." Then, a screen to select the child profile will appear, and once you choose the profile for the child, the device will automatically switch to Amazon Kids Mode.
In Amazon Kids Mode on a Kindle device, there are restrictions on store display and on which Kindle books can be subscribed to, so you can let children use the Kindle device with peace of mind.
