The terrace stone retained a faint, dying warmth long after the sun had fallen beneath the cypress ridge. Down in the valley, the estuary turned from beaten bronze to the cold lilac of dusk, its tides retreating over sandbanks with a sound no louder than dry grass shifting in an autumn gust. For three seasons the library had stood shuttered against the western glare. The tall morocco volumes—d’Anville’s folios, the maritime charts of the Levant, the interleaved copy of Newton’s Opticks—remained precisely where his brother had abandoned them on the night of the gale.
