Kobo Libra 2 (Gen 2)

The terrace stone retained a faint, dying warmth long after the sun had fallen beneath the cypress ridge. Down in the valley, the estuary turned from beaten bronze to the cold lilac of dusk, its tides retreating over sandbanks with a sound no louder than dry grass shifting in an autumn gust. It was at this precise hour, when the gardeners laid aside their scythes and the great bronze clock struck seven, that Lord Cassilis would invariably come down the yew path with his cedar walking-cane.

For three seasons the library had stood shuttered against the western glare. The tall morocco volumes—d’Anville’s folios, the maritime charts of the Levant, the interleaved copy of Newton’s Opticks—remained precisely where his brother had abandoned them on the night of the gale. Dust, infinitely patient, had settled into the gilt tooling of their spines like frost upon winter loam. One did not open them; to disturb their stillness felt less like scholarship and more like an intrusion upon a council of the silent.

"We mistake endurance for peace," he remarked, tracing with his thumb the faint Latin motto cut into its perimeter: Pereunt et imputantur. Above the dark ramparts of the oaks, the first star appeared—crystalline, solitary, indifferent to the century.
